A historic meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping in the South Korean city of Busan has been confirmed. This meeting is considered important to reduce the rising tension of the trade war between the US and China. In this meeting, the two leaders will discuss issues like trade war, fentanyl crisis and technology ban. However, before leaving for a five-day Asia tour, Trump had said that in this meeting, he will also raise the issue of Taiwan and Hong Kong leader Lai Jim.

President Donald Trump left for a five-day tour of Malaysia, Japan and South Korea amidst the shutdown in the US. This is the longest foreign trip so far in his second term. President Trump will attend the ASEAN summit starting Sunday in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

White House Press Secretary Caroline Levitt confirmed that President Trump will also attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit starting October 29 in Gwangju, South Korea, during his Asia trip. Along with the APEC summit, President Trump will also hold a bilateral meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Busan. Trump has also indicated his willingness to meet with North Korean Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un during this trip.

The meeting between Trump and Jinping was confirmed by Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiaqun. He said that Xi Jinping will attend the summit in Gwangju from October 30 to November 1 at the invitation of South Korean President Lee Jae-myung. He said that the leaders of the two countries will hold a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the 32nd APEC Economic Leaders’ Summit in Busan. This meeting between Trump and Jinping will take place amid rising tensions over the trade war between the two countries, in which the two leaders can discuss reducing trade tensions.

US President Trump said before leaving for his Asia tour that he may raise the issue of the release of Taiwan and Hong Kong pro-democracy leader Jim Lai in his meeting with Jinping. We have many issues to talk about. I will raise the issue of Taiwan, but I will not go there. Jim Lai is the founder of a pro-democracy newspaper in Hong Kong. Beijing has detained Jim Lai in Hong Kong under the National Security Law.

This meeting between US President Trump and Chinese President Jinping is taking place at a time when trade friction and policy differences are increasing between the two countries. Beijing has signaled tighter controls on rare earth exports, while Washington has threatened additional tariffs and restrictions on new technologies. Trump has expressed hope for a resolution on all issues, including fentanyl exports and the plight of American farmers.
