The world-famous Louvre Museum in the French capital Paris has been shaken by a theft. The museum has been closed for a day, where many of the world’s most prestigious historical artifacts, including the Mona Lisa, are kept. However, no statement has been made by the museum yet. Media reports are claiming that jewelry has disappeared from Napoleon’s collection. However, the museum cited ‘extraordinary reasons’ for the sudden closure.
French Culture Minister Rachida Dati was the first to give information about the theft in the museum this morning. She wrote in an online post, ‘This morning, the Louvre Museum was robbed before it opened. No injuries were reported. I am at the scene with museum staff and police.’
The media report quoted police sources as saying that the robbers came on a scooter and were armed with small chainsaws. The report said that the robbers fled with jewelry from the museum. The value of the stolen items is still being assessed.
Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said that “priceless jewelry” was stolen from the museum and that the robbery lasted only seven minutes.
