Parklets are on the rise in London to enjoy a moment of peace in car parking spaces

Parklets are places where people sit together. Drink coffee and enjoy a quiet atmosphere. Only people living on the street or in the nearby society can use them. They provide an opportunity for those who do not want to visit shops or cafes. Parklets are being created in London by using unused car parking spaces.

The movement to create parklets has resulted in an increase in parklets. A community parklet is a small public space that converts one or more on-street parking spots into a place where people can sit together. This seating arrangement features greenery in an artistic way.

Parklets are, in short, an extension of a footpath that serves as a community centre. Traffic is a major problem in London, the heart of the UK. Many people are bothered by the constant traffic on the road. Residents create green seating arrangements around their homes, and approval is easily obtained from the administration.

These spaces, called parklets, are where people sit together. Drink coffee and enjoy a quiet environment. Only people living on the street or in the nearby society can use them. They provide an opportunity for those who do not want to visit a shop or cafe. The time spent outside to see other people reduces loneliness.

Parklets act as a bridge between neighbours and people in the community. Following the example set by Hack in 2018, Waltham Forest and Hounslow Council in London launched a community parklet permit system in September 2022. The first was a wonderful community parklet in Waltham Forest.

Hackney became the first council in the UK to create commercial parklets in 2015. The council has assured car owners that parklets pose no threat. They are set up only on vacant and largely unused car parking spaces.

The number of parklets has increased steadily over the past two years. The Parklets Campaign, founded in 2020, is a group of like-minded volunteers who want to make London the parklet capital of the world. Their mission is to create and obtain permits for parklets on residential streets.
