Massive explosion in Mexico supermarket : 23 dead including children, more than 11 injured

A massive explosion has broken out in the northwestern city of Hermosillo amid the celebrations of the ‘Day of the Dead’ festival in Mexico. The incident that took place on Saturday has killed 23 people, including children. 11 people have also been seriously injured in this accident at this store of the popular discount chain Valdoz.

The accident has taken place at a time when the ‘Day of the Dead’ festival is being celebrated in Mexico. The Governor of the state of Sonora, Alfonso Durazo, has confirmed that many minors are also among the dead. He has ordered an investigation into the causes of the incident. The governor said, ‘No one will bear this pain alone. Emergency, security and health services saved many lives.’ The Sonora Red Cross sent 40 of its employees and 10 ambulances to the relief and rescue work.

The cause of the explosion is currently under investigation. Media reports have suggested that the fire was caused by a short circuit. Officials said an electrical transformer installed inside the store could be the likely cause of the accident. The city’s fire chief said that an investigation is underway to determine whether there was an actual explosion or just a fire.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed her deepest condolences to the families of the deceased in a post on Facebook. She contacted the governor of Sonora. She ordered an immediate investigation and directed the interior secretary to provide assistance to the families of the injured.
