Ever since the Indian team was announced before the Australia tour, former Indian captain Rohit Sharma has been in the news. Many cricket fans are upset that the selectors have given Shubman Gill the captaincy instead of former captain Rohit Sharma for the ODI match against Australia. But former India captain and former BCCI president Sourav Ganguly does not believe that there is an issue of removing Rohit Sharma from the ODI captaincy. He praised Rohit and said that he is a very good leader.
Sourav Ganguly said in an interview, ‘Rohit is a very good leader, under his leadership the Indian team has won the T-20 World Cup and the Champions Trophy. His performance has also been good. I am sure the selectors must have spoken to Rohit about the captaincy issue. I don’t think he was removed from the captaincy without informing him. He will be 40 in the 2027 World Cup. This is a big number. This has happened to me with the captaincy. It has happened to Rahul too. Shubman will also have to face it at the age of 40.’
Supporting the decision to make Shubman Gill the captain in ODIs after the Test, Sourav Ganguly said, ‘Promoting Gill is not a wrong decision, he led the team very well in the match against England. I think the decision to make Shubman the captain is right. Rohit can play till the board can prepare a young cricketer to be the captain.’
Sourav Ganguly had said in an interview, ’40 is a long age. Rohit’s fitness also depends on how many years he can play cricket and how many runs he scores. For fitness, he should play domestic cricket. Because cricket is a game that you have to keep playing cricket to become the best in it.’ Team India’s tour of Australia is set to begin this month. During this period, both the teams will play ODI and T20 series. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will be seen playing international cricket after a long time. Both have been selected in the ODI team. However, Shubman Gill has been appointed as the captain in place of Rohit Sharma.
