Canada has reduced the number of study permits issued to international students. Permits issued to Indian students fell by 31% in the first quarter of 2025 compared to the same period last year. According to data from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), only 30,640 students were granted study permits between January and March 2025, compared to 44,295 during the same period in 2024. In January 2025, Canada’s population was 41.5 million, of which 32 million were temporary residents. This is about 7.25%. The Canadian government wants to reduce this to less than 5% by 2028. This is why IRCC has increased the study permit limit for 2025 to 437,000, which is 10% less than 2024. This limit will remain in effect until 2026.
