1.71 lakh people committed suicide in the country in 2023, the highest number of 10700 farmers ended their lives

The National Crime Records Bureau has released the countrywide statistics for the year 2023. The statistics released including suicides of farmers, students, atrocities on women have revealed many shocking information. According to this official data, 10700 people associated with agriculture committed suicide in the year 2023, including 4630 farmers and 6096 agricultural laborers. While a total of 171418 people committed suicide in the year 2023, 66 percent of them had an annual income of less than one lakh.

Maharashtra ranks first with 38 percent in suicides of farmers and agricultural laborers, Karnataka is second with 22 percent and Andhra Pradesh is third with 8 percent. Along with this, the total number of suicides in the year 2023 has also been released across the country, according to which a total of 171418 people committed suicide across the country in the year 2023, of which 66 percent, i.e. about 113416 people, had an annual income of less than one lakh rupees. Apart from farmers, these suicides also include students.

According to the data of the National Crime Records Bureau, there has been an alarming 64 percent increase in student suicides in the country in the last 10 years. From 2013 to 2023, i.e. in 10 years, a total of 117846 students cut their lives short by suicide. If we look at it by year, 13892 students committed suicide in 2023. This figure was 12526 in the year 2020, 13089 in the year 2023, and 13044 in the year 2022.

The total suicide rate in India increased by 23 percent in five years (2019 to 2023), while the student suicide rate increased by 34 percent in five years. The number of students in the total suicides in the year 2023 is more than 8 percent. Out of the 13892 students who committed suicide in the year 2023, 7330 were boys and 6559 were girls. The biggest concern is that the proportion of very young students i.e. students up to standard 10 is 24 percent, 17 percent up to standard 12, and 14 percent up to standard 5.

Of the more than 1.71 lakh people who committed suicide across the country, 66 percent had an annual income of less than one lakh, 28 percent i.e. 48432 had an annual income between one lakh and five lakh. Only 5.5 percent of the deceased had graduated or higher education, a large portion of the deceased, 42238, were those who had studied up to matriculation. Atrocities on children and women have also increased. A total of 177335 cases of atrocities on children were registered in the year 2023, which is 9 percent more than in the year 2022.

Similarly, out of 4.5 lakh cases of crimes against women, Uttar Pradesh ranks first with 66318 cases, Maharashtra second with 47 thousand cases and Rajasthan third with 45450 cases. Among the cases of crimes against women, 29670 cases were of rape. 6154 cases of dowry death were also registered. Of all these cases, the highest number of cases is 133676 i.e. 19 percent.
